Paradise for wildflowers. Grasslands can be planted on their own as alternatives to lawns or combined with a wide variety of colorful wildflowers that bloom from early spring into summer. Garden grasslands can be watered to remain green most of the year, or left to go dormant in the summer as they do in nature. Summer-dry grasslands include coastal prairies with summer fog and valley grasslands with summer sun. Although many wildflowers live under both conditions, species from coastal grasslands better serve coastal garden sites, while species from interior valleys thrive best beyond the fog belt.
